Short history of New Era Brand

Ehrhardt Koch is the one to whom we owe our New Era caps. It all started in 1920 in New York, when Koch, after borrowing 1000 dollars from his sister and 1000 dolllars from one of his friends, started his own business, producing caps - E. Koch Cap Company (later to become New Era Cap Co.).

His first employees were mostly family members, but their production numbers were impressive - 60,000 Gatsby hats a year.

Later, in 1932 his son Harold realized that a change was needed; they start making baseball caps that at that moment were growing in popularity. That`s how they got their first MLB contract with Cleveland Indians.

In the 50`s they made a series of adjustmens and improvements in their techniques and designs, obtaining the adjustable cap with elastic reinforcement.

Later, in the 60`s, after the invitation to the Winter Baseball Meetings where they could sell directly to the teams of the Major and Minor League, New Era become the official cap suplier of half of the MLB teams.

By 1974 almost all Major League Baseball teams had signed contracts with Koch`s company.

During the 80`s, due to David Koch, the son of Harold, their business strategy improved even more, directing their attention to new segments of public with University sports caps, tennis and golf caps and military caps.

After years of hard working and improvements, in the 90`s New Era got its exclusive license to suply to all MLB teams on-field baseball caps.

In the 2000s they went for associating their image with other sports also; that`s how in a relative short period of time New Era signed big contracts with National Football League, Australian cricket League, Canadian Football League, Manchester United and NBA.
