History of the NHL

The National Hockey League was founded in 1917 in Canada with four teams. In 1924 it expanded to the United States. The champion of the final phase wins the Stanley Cup, the oldest professional sports trophy in North America.

For 98 years the most victoriuos teams, that have existed since the founding of the NHL were the Montreal Canadiens and the Toronto Maple Leafs. The first American team that was created was Boston Bruins; it continues active since 1924.

The decade of the 80s and the 90s were the most relevant of the NHL worldwide.

The end of the iron curtain led to the arrival of Russians in the NHL. In 1980 the player Peter Stastny fled from Czechoslovakia with his wife and brother to sign for Quebec Nordiques. It was also relevant the arrival of Sergei Fedorov, star of the Soviet team in 1990, when he took a tour of his team in the United States to escape the concentration and travel to Detroit. That's where he signed for the Detroit Red Wings. We can also give importance to the Russian striker Viacheslav Fetisov and the Czech legend Dominik Hašek the Dominator. For they are stars of the NHL and architects of the victory of the Czech team in Olympic games in Nagano.
